Shapechanger Birth Shapechanger Tales Book 1 eBook Laer Carroll
Someone somewhere compared this book with P.G. Allison's Missy the Werecat series, and that's fine. There's parallel between two teen girls who discover strange abilities and go on to drastically reshape their lives. And I dig the Missy the Werecat books. Laer Carroll's Shapechanger's Birth isn't a contemporary read. It's more a sprawling historical jaunt with a paranormal element tossed in.The first time Mary McCarthy cheated death was in the year 1854 when she stirred in her grave, no longer the husk of a 53-year-old Irish farmer's wife and granny, but, rather, in the starving body of a 13-year-old girl. Mary, bright and inquisitive, promptly stumbles across her newfound otherworldly abilities, and, so, she sets out to make something of herself in Ireland.
I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did, but I right away found Mary compelling. I so wanted to just go finish reading that I resented having to tear myself away to perform piddling activities like eating, sleeping, and walking the stupid dog. Maybe it gets too heavy with exposition at times. Maybe Mary has things a little too easy. She's rarely challenged to the point where she has to extend herself or expend all her occult energy.
But I relish it when I read about a strong, kickass female character. Mary doesn't much second guess herself. She doesn't get down in the dumps. She starts her second crack at life being raised in a Quaker orphanage, and everything flows from there. I ate up Mary's sprawling adventures, loving the unpredictability of her trajectory. Note that there's more science than the paranormal that figures into the story. After all, Mary is a rational and enlightened "young" woman, and she's quick to scholar up, comprehending the advantages in conducting - and funding - research in various scientific fields.
But she also doesn't hesitate to make use of her powers to advance her ambitions, whether it's strongarming hooligans or dispensing fear as a frightful eldritch urban legend. I do so love it when the protagonist is, on the surface, someone unassuming but who has hidden advantages. Mary starts out from nothing but grows into- well, what's the fun in my spoilering it for you? Suffice it to say, there's immense gratification in observing an implacable Mary as she carves out an eventful destiny in a period when women barely had any rights. Shapechanger's Birth is wordy. But there's enough bloody action splattered in. For the bookish prude, there isn't any graphic sexual content. However, Mary doesn't shy away from expressing her needs. It's just that she takes care of them "off-camera." To be honest, even the violence isn't so graphic. Still, Laer Carroll is very adept at staging action sequences. Mary in savage combat mode is a sight to behold...

Shapechanger Birth Shapechanger Tales Book 1 eBook Laer Carroll Reviews
A fun easy read. Yes there are issues but for a delightful escape from reality for a few hours it is more than acceptable.
The story is surprisingly great. A story of a caring woman with a new lease on life and the power to do something with it.
The author has a good imagination and, on occasion, can write in an interesting way. He needs to collect all of the Shapechanger stories and release them in larger collections. After he has edited them and had others proof read them. That is the greatest weakness of most authors. If something is worth writing, it is worth writing with as few grammatical and spelling errors as possible. Surely the author has many friends who are qualified to proof read his material before publishing it.
I was spoiled, I think, by reading "The Space Orphan" first. It's by far his best work. Given all I have said above, I will continue to read his stories. There is something about his work that I find difficult to explain, but keeps my attention and makes me want to read more. I am hoping he is writing more now that will follow his success with "The Space Orphan" and find a good editor and several proof readers.
Shapechanger's Birth covers the (re-)birth of the Shapechanger Mary McCarthy in Ireland in the 19th century. The story tells of the adventures that Mary has as she learns about herself after an uninspected return to life. She befriends a growing number of the people that she meets and defends them against the criminals that are preying upon them. She also takes a keen interest in science especially medicine. With the heightened abilities of her body, she is able to direct researchers to a number of discoveries.
The action scenes are well done but the scenes where Mary shows her maternal side in helping others are better. I have not noticed any errors in the logic of the story where I would wonder why something occurred.
I enjoyed Laer's take on 19th century life in Ireland.
Laer is using computer software to generate the covers of his stories. They may be short of what one expects in a good hand drawn cover but they match the story. You don't wonder about where was the scene on the cover when you finish the story or why the cover does not match the story.
Note I became aware of Laer Carroll's writings from his website, shapechangertales.com. I have read incomplete versions of all his published and unpublished work in the Shapechanger universe there. I wrote my reviews of his work so he will be encourage to write more Shapechanger tales when the number of sales increased. I am ready to spend my money on the next story as I have on the first four.
I am Ed Patterson writing this review under the account that I share with my wife Pamela. At , I am into SF and she is into shiny things.
Good History, some snark, excellent writing and consistent character developments! Closely proofread!!!
Buy it! Get hooked on the Series! Wc
I have been enjoying Laer Carroll’s Shapechanger novels. They are very imaginative alternate histories, so fall into science fiction. The two reviewed here are Shapechanger’s Birth and Shapechanger’s Progress. (A third title is mentioned but was never written Shapechanger’s Destiny). I wish there were more.
The books concern a young women who dies and is reborn with a spirit allowing her to do magical things.
There are quite a few typos, some of which detract from the story. The most common one is ‘lead’ for ‘led’. Annoying for a scientist to write! Carroll also confuses the possessive with the plural, especially with names. He also writes locations as a single word, thus CorkIreland without a space. There are also some formatting problems. But in spite of these errors, The books are fun and I highly recommend them. Any one enjoying Lina Potter’s series will probably enjoy these as well.
